8 Tips to Elevate Your Design Career in 2025

Wassup creatives,

As we approach 2025, it’s the perfect time to reflect on how to further your design career. These aren’t just tips—they’re lessons I’ve learned along the way, crafted to help you grow, stay inspired, and make the most of new opportunities.

1. Keep Your Portfolio Updated

Most companies will soon roll out new budget plans, which often means hiring. Don’t get caught with an outdated portfolio when opportunities arise. Take time now to refresh your work, showcasing your best and most recent projects. The last thing you want is to waste valuable time scrambling to update your portfolio when you could be focusing on creating a special project tailored for that dream job.

2. Decide Where You Want to Go

Graphic design is a service, and like any service, it can be replaced. But the field also offers an incredible ladder of growth. If you’re serious about progressing, consider the paths available: senior designer, art director, creative director, workflow leader, design communications, organization, or even concept artist. Think deeply about where you want to be, and start aligning your actions to climb that ladder.

3. Invest in Your Workspace

Your environment impacts your productivity more than you might think. A great workspace doesn’t have to be extravagant, but it should inspire you. If finances are tight, prioritize improvements that matter—like a better chair, monitor, or lighting. It’s okay to skip a few in-game cosmetics or nights out to invest in a setup that supports your creativity and growth.

4. Learn From Those Ahead of You

Growth is nearly impossible without communication. Make it a goal to connect with people who outperform you in areas like personal branding, design skills, or marketing. Defentialy marketing. These connections can be mentors, friends, or allies, but they all share one thing: they push you to grow. Be authentic when reaching out—you’d be surprised how many amazing people are willing to share their knowledge if you approach with curiosity and honesty.

5. Pick Up Something New

If you want to evolve, learn a new skill in design. Try exploring the inner workings of photography, lighting, or camera language. Or pick up Blender or C4D and learn the basics of 3D design. You don’t have to master it, but getting comfortable with the fundamentals makes it easier to build on those skills when the time comes. Basics aren’t hard to learn, it’s your willingness to learn that is keeping you from opening a new program. Get to it.

6. Revisit Old Lessons

Rewatch or reread that book or video you once said you learned something from. Nine times out of ten, when knowledge doesn’t stick, it’s because it wasn’t translatable at the time. Maybe that’s just me, but I doubt I’m the only one. All knowledge has value, but not all of it can be applied immediately, which often makes it forgettable. Revisiting those lessons can uncover insights you missed before and make them more relevant to where you are now. Rewatch, reread, and see how much more it resonates this time around.

7. Collaborate and Build Together

When I was starting out, I avoided collaboration, thinking it would pull focus away from me. But after years as a hiring manager, I’ve come to value collaboration skills deeply. Knowing how to share ideas, understand others’ perspectives, and create something amazing together is invaluable. Start small—maybe a mini studio project with a few other creatives—and experience how rewarding teamwork can be.

8. Rediscover the Fun

Don’t forget how you have fun in the design process. Don’t skip or rush through the steps that bring you joy. If it means relearning a workflow that doesn’t interfere with deadlines, then it’s worth the effort. For me, research is my favorite part of the process—I spend a third or more of my time there, but sometimes I don’t allow myself to explore enough. I always deliver a product my clients love, but if I forced myself into a workflow that didn’t feel enjoyable, it wouldn’t be worth it. Find that workflow. It’s not just a buzzword—it’s how you’ll sustain your passion and enjoy your craft for the long haul.

These tips come from personal experience and lessons learned over time. I hope they resonate with you and help you make 2025 your best year yet.
